The bat box
Yesterday I rode home along the Big Soos Creek Trail. I’d noticed a week or so ago that bat boxes have been placed along the trail in a couple of spots.
Xeract’s post about long-eared bats made me think about the bats I’ve seen in my lifetime. Not many, really. I’ve seen Grey Headed Flying Foxes (Pteropus poliocephalus), and Vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus) at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. But I’ve only once seen bats in the wild. We were returning from a trip to Utah, and were returning to Washington by way of Death Valley, California. We saw them flitting around a light pole in the parking lot of our hotel, just outside Las Vegas, Nevada. I don’t even know what species they were.
Here is the link to Xeract’s post:

There are sixteen species of bats that live in Washington, and I haven’t seen any of them. I will be working on that over the next few months. I plan on keeping my eyes on the newly installed bat boxes along Big Soos Creek…
