Lawn aerators are the best way to make sure your lawn gets the aeration it needs. However there are several things you need to know before buying one to make sure you get the correct one for your garden. In this article I’ll talk a bit about why you need to bother with aerating your lawn as well as how to choose an aerator.
Why aerate your lawn?
So let’s start with why you need to aerate the lawn. Over a long period of time the soil that the lawn is growing on becomes too compacted together and dense from people walking it that it has very little air inside. This is damaging the soil because it makes it harder for water to flow through which is the lifeblood of all plants, especially your lawn. Also the amount of air circulation in the soil becomes reduced and the depth of the plants roots are not as big.
Therefore when you use lawn aerators you’ll find that there is a greater amount of water and oxygen to be used by the plants as well as allowing the roots to grow to a deeper level.
How to aerate your lawn
Once you’ve decided that you need lawn aerating advice then you can choose between doing it yourself or buying aerators for lawns. The choice is yours although using a rolling lawn aerator is probably the easiest way to do so although it will cost you more money. You should try and make sure that you aerate the lawn at least once a year at the beginning of your lawns growing season to make sure it grows as well as possible during the summer months. However when laying a new lawn you should avoid using lawn aerators on it until its second year.
The good thing about a rolling lawn aerator is that it usually won’t cost you that much money. For example you can get a 30cm model for only £33 which isn’t much at all considering you’ll be suing it every year. Lawn aerators in general aren’t that expensive so even if you have a small budget for garden tools they are definitely one thing you’ll want to get.
